While most of the Greater Cleveland Area consists of relatively flat terrain, the coast of Lake Erie has breathtaking bluffs along the waterfront.  Typically, the abrupt drop off points are located at the rear of a deep lot…other times the cliff is the lot!  One of Schill Architecture’s most challenging yet exciting lakefront projects involved defying gravity and working with a lot that sloped 55′ from one end to the other. Though some called the lot unbuildable, we say “anything is possible!”

This luxury lakefront home, overlooking the intersection of the Rocky River and Lake Erie, appears to be a typical neighborhood home from the street.  The back of the home, however, is quite the structural feat!  In addition to having 3 full levels of living space, the home also has a 20′ deep basement to accommodate the large quantities of structural support needed to brace the home on the cliff.  Though the construction process was a challenge for the crews, the views that the clients can experience from the interior and exterior living spaces of their home allow them to feel as if they are on a vacation every day of their lives!
